Speaker Background
Patrick Hughes, Building Technologies Integration Manager at Oak Ridge National Laboratory , has been involved with research, development, demonstration, market transformation, and deployment of sustainable building technologies since 1974.  Mr. Hughes leads ORNL's building technologies research program. He is a P.E., holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from UW – Madison , and holds an M.S. from Stanford's Engineering Management Program.

Summary of Lecture
Sustainability
requires tackling climate change, and that means reducing carbon in the atmosphere sooner rather than later, especially from energy use associated with buildings. Integrating what is already commercially available helps but will not get the job done. Many advanced component technologies and integration techniques are at the tipping point and if pushed in the right direction, will emerge and achieve high volumes and affordability, and carry large carbon reductions along for the ride. Needed are a few component manufacturers interested in leading their industries to higher efficiencies, a few large green community developers to serve as test-beds and seed markets, and a few universities to inject specialized expertise where it is needed.
