2007 Power Lunch Series

Geological Carbon Sequestration

What will we do with CO2? When and Where?

May 1, 2007
Tong Auditorium, 1003 Engineering Centers Building, 1550 Engineering Drive, UW-Madison
11:00am - 2:15pm

WPUI is pleased to present the "Geological Carbon Sequestration" Power Lunch seminar with the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin and the UW Energy Institute.

Program Summary
The Wisconsin Public Utility Institute will host a seminar to explore a variety of carbon sequestration issues, including whether Wisconsin is capable of capturing carbon and storing it in geologic formations, if and when this might be an option, and what environmental risks geological carbon sequestration may create.

Program Background
In preparing for greenhouse gas limitations, institutions around the country are researching and piloting ways to capture and store carbon. Geological carbon sequestration is potentially both a short and long-term storage option, aimed at reducing the build-up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Researchers are currently focusing their efforts on devising storage methods. Some of the options currently being considered are to use it for enhanced oil or coal bed methane recovery production, and for injection into saline formations.

In a “Power Lunch” format, this seminar will:

•  Explore carbon sequestration
•  Review storage technology options
•  Discuss carbon sequestration regional initiatives, the Department of Energy's research program, and public-private partnerships that focus on carbon sequestration
•  Review of Wisconsin 's geological options in terms of potential feasibility for carbon sequestration in the state
•  Include an open panel discussion on policy frameworks that make these types of advances possible, and regulatory and legal issues that remain barriers to deployment

Who should attend
This course is intended for energy industry professionals working in asset planning and management, environmental compliance, corporate communications, corporate planning, energy and emission traders and portfolio managers, consumer organization representatives, legislative staff, financial institutions, engineers, regulatory staff, state and local government personnel.

When you register for this event you may download a .pdf of the February 2007 PSCW / WI DNR study: "Integrated Gasification Combined-Cycle Technology: Costs, Benefits and Prospects for Future Use In Wisconsin".
